Ettal Abbey
As the excommunicated King Ludwig of Bavaria returned unharmed to Bavaria he honored his vow and in 1330 founded the Benedictine monastery of Ettal Abbey.
Baroque Architecture in Upper Bavaria
The abbey was subject to an eventful history. While the exercise of religion still pays an important role to this day, the abbey currently harbors a school and a boarding school. A number of businesses ensure that the “basic needs” of the abbey are covered: from the abbey’s own bakery via the brewery and distillery through to its own electricity plant, the abbey is among the largest employers in the area.
An extremely interesting trip, ideally combinable with a visit to Linderhof Palace and rounded off by a hearty visit to the Ettal Abbey brewery or to one of the nearby inns.
As a result of the great demand, for those who wish to visit the liquor manufacturing facility or the brewery in addition to the basilica, it is best to reserve tickets in advance. ( www.kloster-ettal.de)
