Pilgrimage Church of Wies

One of the most beautiful pilgrimage churches in the world. It can be reached by car from the Sonnenhof in a little less than an hour (Steingaden, 65km) and ideally combined with a trip to the royal castles in Schwangau.

A World Heritage Site since 1983

The world famous pilgrimage church, „Zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wiese“, the Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Savior, was built for the Steingaden Abbey (1745-1754) by Domminikus Zimmermann as commissioned by the Abbot of Steingaden, Hyazinth Gaßner.

The impressive ornaments and the light pouring into the building impress visitors from every part of the world and have led to the Church of Wies having been awarded its status as Unesco World Heritage Site. The rococo stucco of Dominikus Zimmermann and the frescoes of Johann Baptist Zimmermann are unique.

Entry to the church is free of charge, it is, however, requested that the visitor make a donation. (www.wieskirche.de)
